Members of the working group Alpine Land Snails of the NHM have visited Montenegro recently in the frame of a co-operation project with the University of Montenegro funded by the OeAD-WTZ (Project No. ME 10/ 2016). Under supervision of Prof. Vladimir Pesic we supported students from the University of Podgorica in establishing their study design and their first practical working steps.

Point of interest is a population of the rock dwelling door snail species Montenegrina subcristata, near Virpazar at Lake Skadar, which shall be analyzed with respect to population size, activity, range, growth and habitat preferences. Luckily, we faced cool and humid “snail weather” that kept the snails active and enabled us to test marking of individuals under realistic conditions. We enjoyed the stay in Montenegro and the communication with our colleagues from Montenegro very much.
