After a one year break we were happy to meet again at the restaurant Kölblwirt in Johnsbach for the Workshop “Alpine Land Snails extended” which took place from 1.-5. August 2016. This time we extended our scientific program and organized, together with the National Park Gesäuse, two public lecture evenings (1. and 2. August) entitled “Wissenschaft im Wirtshaus: Biodiversität – Vielfalt auf allen Ebenen” (“Pub Science: biodiversity at all levels”). The main focus, biodiversity, is a frequently used keyword, although many don´t know its actual meaning. In our contributions the value, status as well as assessment of biodiversity was discussed. The topics ranged from Paleontology to extant species, from Alpine endemics to DNA barcoding. The restaurant Köblwirt proved to be a perfect location for this event which promoted fruitful and intense discussions. In two further evening sessions we presented scientific talks on recent research performed with various snail species. The topics ranged from phylogenetics and morphology to evolutionary biology and ecology, with special emphasis on the Alps and the Balkan area.
With almost a week of perfect weather we performed several wonderful excursions and collected snails and insects in and around the National Park Gesäuse, e.g., on Bosruck, Scheiblingstein, and Großes Maiereck. We also enjoyed the visit to the Natural History Museum in Admont where Karl-Heinz Krisch guided us through the exhibition. Another highlight, especially for the children, were the fossil sites at Gams presented to us by Heinz Kollmann.
We thank the management of the National Park Gesäuse for mental and organizational support, and the Friends of the Natural History Museum Vienna for financial support. Special thanks to the family Wolf-Berghofer at the restaurant Köblwirt who has hosted us for many years and where we always ejoyed our stay. Finally, we are grateful to all the participants for being there, for the interesting discussions and the good mood!
