Montenegrina laxa in the Terküza valley, near Tirana, Albania

We welcome Zoltán Fehér as a new member of our group. He initiated our new project ’Speciation in rock-dwelling land snails: Understanding the origin of diversity using Montenegrina as a model system’, which has been launched recently. Funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF P 26581-B25) the three years project started in June 2014. The project is dedicated to the door-snail (clausiliid) genus Montenegrina which will be used as a model to gain insights into the speciation of obligate rock-dwelling gastropods.

Zoltán Fehér earlier worked in the Hungarian Natural History Museum as the curator of the Mollusca Collection. He has been studying the mollusc fauna of the Balkans for more than two decades. He is well versed both in traditional and molecular taxonomy, as well as in conservation genetics and statistical phylogeography. His knowledge of clausiliid taxonomy (author of 14 Montenegrina taxa among others) and field experience (participated in 24 fieldtrips to the study area so far) make him an essential member of the Montenegrina team.
